Ladies 3rd XI Match Reports 2011-2012

24/03/2012
ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 1
  Taunton C.S. - 2

Hornets were strong right from the start of the game and they were passing the ball well to each other. The ball was up and down the pitch a lot as both teams were pretty even. Hornets had a few short corners but were unable to score. Hornets kept Taunton from scoring as the defence kept getting the ball back out of their 'D' and back up the other end of the pitch. All of the goals came in the 2nd half. Taunton scored their 1st goal at a short corner. Then Hornets came fight back and Lucy Wardle ran the ball down the line and then passed the ball to the penalty spot and found Donna Carlisle, whose 1st game back it was after being injured by a Taunton C.S player when Hornets played them away, and Donna had a lovely strike on goal and scored. Hornets kept strong and had a few more chances on goal but were unlucky to score. Hornets’ goalie Bryony Greenhow was very strong and came running out to stop Taunton scoring. Taunton scored their 2nd goal due to a player being left unmarked right in front of goal but Bryony Greenhow had come out to make a save already. Player of the match was awarded to Emma Helliwell.

Taw Valley 2nd XI - 1
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 0

The game was fairly even but ECVH were the slightly strong team out of the 2. ECVH were tackling well and they were making some good runs and passes. Goalie Francesca Jones didn’t have a lot to do in the game but made some good saves. ECVH's 2 new juniors Emma Helliwell and Caitlin Tryell were very strong and were making some very good tackles and won the ball lots of times. Emilia Tinley who hasn't played for a season and a half played very well and was running around all of the pitch. When ECVH lost the ball they all fought to get the ball back. Taw's goal was very questionable as Christy Glover had won the ball cleanly at the top of the 'D' but got her stick got taken out by a Taw player who then hit the ball and all of the ECVH players just seemed to stop as it should have been a ECVH ball but the ball just trickled over the line. After this ECVH fought back even more and were very unlucky not to score a goal. Emma Helliwell was named player of the match.

ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 1
  Bridgwater 2nd XI - 3

ECVH Ladies 3’s allowed visitors Bridgwater 2’s to score early on through lack of marking. The visitors then scored their 2nd by an error from the young Hornet's keeper. But a change on set-up, seeing the defence bolstered by Christy Glover and moving Becca Hart to sweeper saw the home team move up a gear. The 2nd half saw Bridgwater score their 3rd goal from an error in a short corner, but Hornets fought back with veteran Gerry Davey's creative play pass the ball to Lucy Wardle, who passed to Heather Ward. Heather then side-stepped the Bridgwater keeper to score. Hornets were close to scoring again with some great runs by youngsters Bryony Saunders and Josie Morgan. Becca Hart played extremely well as central sweeper, earning her player of the match. Hornets next game is away against bottom of the table, Taw Valley.

Weston super Mare 2nd XI - 4
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 1

Hornets had good spells and bad spells during the 1st half. When they were moving for the ball and calling they played really well and were awarded short corners but were unable to score from them. Hornets also had moments when they all seemed to fall asleep and they let Weston score 3 simple goals in the 1st half. In the 2nd half Hornets played much better, and the defence didn't have a lot to do. Rosie Williams, Josie Morgan and Lela Vile were playing well together on the right hand side of the pitch and they kept battling for the ball when they lost it. Hornets’ goal was scored from the ball being hit from a '16' by Fran Jones to Katie Williams, who moved into a space to receive the ball. Katie Williams then ran the ball all the way up to Weston's 'D' and had a shot on the reverse as soon as she got into the 'D' and scored. Hornets were awarded another short corner but were unable to score from it then Weston took the ball which should have been a '16' but was further up the pitch and they ran the ball down the pitch with not a lot of Hornets players back and from a miss touch from a Weston player they managed to score again, but goalie Bryony Greenhow ran out to try and stop her. Player of the match was awarded to Katie Williams.

Winscombe 2nd XI - 6
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 0

ECVH had a very poor 1st half and they all seemed to be half asleep and allowed Winscombe to score 5 goals. Near the end of the 1st half ECVH seemed to wake up a little bit and they were awarded 2 short corners but were unable to score from them. In the 2nd half ECVH had a much better game as they were talking a lot more and looking to pass the ball to their own players and Winscombe were only able to score 1 goal. Player of the match was awarded to Katie Williams.

Somerset Gryphons 2nd XI - 6
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 0

ECVH travelled away to Clevedon with 10 players, 6 of whom were aged 16 and under, to play top of the table Somerset Gryphons. ECVH did not have a good 1st half and were making lots of silly mistakes which meant Somerset Gryphons had lots of short corners and they were just the strongest team from the start scoring 5 of their 6 goals in the 2nd half. After the half time talk ECVH seemed to wake up and were playing a lot better, with lots of good passes and tackles happening and they managed to get the ball into Somerset Gryphons 'D' a few times. Heather Ward made an excellent tackle and just had the goalie to take on and was very unlucky to score from her tackle and run. Jess Grandfield was named player of the match as she was playing excellently, dribbling passed players, getting into good positions to score goals and she made an excellent stop when she ran 1 at a short corner.

ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 3
  Cheddar 2nd XI - 1

ECVH were strong from the start of the game and were passing the ball around well to each other and they had good runs down the wings. The 1st goal came from Ella Knight who was in the right place in the 'D' as she got a rebound from the keeper’s pads and used some skills to get it around the keeper to score. The 2nd and 3rd goal came from Ginny Cottrell after the ball had been taken from a 16 and passed around the midfield. The 2nd goal was some good team work between Lucy Wardle and Rosie Williams. Lucy passed the ball out to Rosie who then ran the ball down the wing and then went along the baseline and passed it to Ginny who then scored. The 3rd goal came in the 2nd half and it was another ball which was taken from a 16 and passed around the midfield and some good skills from the players going around the Cheddar players and Ginny managed to score again. Cheddar had a few chances but were unlucky, but they scored from a short corner which was very hard for Bryony Greenhow to save. Player of the match went to Katie Williams.

Taunton Vale 5th XI - 1
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 0

ECVH ladies 3rds travelled away to play against Taunton Vale with a mixture of older players and younger players. From the start ECVH were playing well and when Taunton Vale had the ball all of the ECVH players kept fighting to get the ball back. Taunton Vale had several chances on goal but young Bryony Greenhow had an outstanding match in goal making some excellent saves and she wasn't afraid of coming out to get the ball. ECVH worked hard to get the ball into Taunton Vale's 'D' and were awarded a few short corners but were unable to get a goal. ECVH kept Taunton Vale from scoring until the last 5 minutes where Bryony made 3 excellent saves in a row but unfortunately there were 3 Taunton Vale players and only 1 ECVH plus Bryony so Taunton were able to score the only goal of the game. Player of the match went to Bryony Greenhow.

ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 4
  Torbay - 0

Hornets had a friendly against Torbay who were only able to get 8 players so ECVH lent them 2 of their players. ECVH played very well as a team and they were passing the ball around to each other and the calling for the ball was really good. All of the goals were scored through free play and the 1st was scored by Beth Hart. ECVH continued to attack at Katie Williams scored a very good goal, the ball hit the far post and deflected in. Becky Carvell scored the 3rd goal as she was in the right place to get the rebound off of the keeper’s pads from Jess Hawkins' strike at goal. The 4th goal came from player of the match Rosie Williams who got herself into some great positions and was calling well for the ball. Even though Bryony Greenhow didn’t have a lot to do in goal she made 2 great saves.

ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 3
  Wells - 0

ECVH ladies 3s had a friendly against Wells and they played really well as a team. All through the game they were passing the ball around to each other and they used both sides of the pitch and passed the ball backwards as well as forwards. This helped ECVH to score their 3 goals, the 1st of which was scored by junior Bethany Squires in the 1st half. The other 2 goals were scored in the 2nd half through passing the ball around to each other and passing the ball from one side of the pitch to the other. When ECVH lost the ball they kept fighting to get the ball back again. Wells had a few chances to score goals but ECVH's defence were strong and Sophie Taylor had a great game in goal making some really good saves. Players of the match were Katie James, Charlotte Pring, Lucy Wardle and Bethany Squires.

Taunton C.S - 8
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 0

ECVH Laides 3rds travelled away to Taunton with only 10 players but played most of the game with only 9 due to Heather Ward getting injured in the first 10minutes. ECVH battled well and got the ball into Taunton's 'D' a few times but were unable to get a shot on goal. ECVH found it hard when Taunton had the ball due to only having 9 players but they defended well and Donna Carlisle did well in goal. ECVH were unlucky when Taunton scored their goals. ECVH played a lot better in the 2nd half and were passing the ball a lot more but were still unable to get a shot on goal. ECVH also started to get very tired as they were doing a lot more running around especially Ginny Cottrell in midfield. ECVH had to finish the game early as Donna Carlisle got injured as well due to a Taunton player getting her stick caught in Donna's pads and pulling her to the floor causing her to twist her already injured knee. Player of the match was Lela Vile as she defended really well and did some really good tackles and also cleared the ball out of the 'D' lots of times.

26/11/2011
ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 3
  Taw Valley 2nd XI - 1

Hornets got off to a very strong start and were passing the ball well between each other and they had a few chances at scoring but Taw's goalie saved them. Taw got the ball off of Hornets a few times but every player was fighting to get the ball back and Hornets' defence were solid which made it hard for Taw to get into the 'D' and have a shot on goal. Hornets were continuing to pass the between each other and got it into Taw's 'D' and Ginny Cottrell managed to get the ball passed the keeper after a few attempts. Taw then fought back and managed to get a short corner. Hornets’ goalie Donna Carlisle made some good saves but Taw were on the rebounds and they managed to just get the ball into the goal by hitting the post and the ball went in. Ginny Cottrell then caught Taw off guard as she took a self pass from the centre and got the ball passed their players and scored her 2nd goal after about 1minute of Taw scoring their goal. In the 2nd half Hornets stayed strong and Lucy Harrison was unlucky not to score a goal as she had lots of attempts but they either just went wide or the keeper saved them. Hornets kept battling and Beth Hart was stood right of the keeper and got a rebound and then managed to score. All of Hornets’ players kept running around a lot and they never gave up. Joint players of the match were Ginny Cottrell and Ella Knight.

Bridgwater 2nd XI - 7
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 1

Hornets travelled away to Bridgwater with 13 players and the 1st half they were trying to find players strongest positions as they had a few new players, which allowed Bridgwater to score 6 of their 7 goals. Hornets were attacking Bridgwater but were unable to find the goal. Bridgwater had several short corners in the 1st half one of which they scored one of their goals but the ball was a little bit high. A few times the ball came off of Hornets’ goal posts and unfortunately Bridgwater were quicker at getting onto the rebounds than Hornets were. Hornets had a much better 2nd half as they had found the players strongest positions and were passing the ball to each other. Hornets found their way to Bridgwater's 'D' and Ginny Cottrell scored Hornets’ only goal of the match. Bridgwater then attacked again and managed to get another short corner which they managed to score from. But overall Hornets’ were a lot stronger in the 2nd half. Player of the match was Katie Williams.

ECVH started off strong and were attacking WSM, passing the ball to each other well. Ginny Cottrell soon scored the 1st goal from some good play and passing from all of the ECVH players. ECVH had a very young team again but all of them were strong and were making good tackles and kept fighting for the ball if they lost it. WSM scored their 1st goal just before half time. In the second half ECVH stayed strong and Ginny Cottrell soon scored her second goal of the game and ECVH's second goal. WSM then scored their second goal due to ECVH not marking their players close enough. ECVH then attacked WSM's 'D' again and Becca Hart scored the 3rd goal from the top of the 'D'. The ball hit one of WSM's players foot and Becca Hart kept going and scored her goal. Even though ECVH's defence were strong WSM still managed to score their 3rd goal. Somerset Gryphons 2nd XI - 5
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 0

This was always going to be a tough game for the IIIrds as Gryphs came 4th in the equivalent League last year. Hornets had plenty of chances to score, including about 6 short corners but were unable to convert. The final score of 5-0 to the visitors did not reflect this. Joint players of the match were Jess Hawkins and Charlotte Pring.

ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 1
  Taunton Vale 5th XI - 2

ECVH Ladies 3rds had their 1st league game against Taunton Vale 5ths. ECVH played well and had a lot of the possession throughout the match but in the 1st half they were unable to get the ball past Taunton Vale's talented goalie. ECVH's defence, Charlie Pring, Sarah Harwood and player of the match Katie Williams kept battling when Taunton Vale were in their 'D' and young goalie Bryony Greenhow saved the ball a few times. Unfortunately Taunton managed to score both of their goals in the 1st half but ECVH did not give up and in the 2nd half they managed to score their goal. Donna Carlisle who was playing centre forward in the 1st half dropped deeper in the 2nd half which was very influential. Donna took a free hit from inside Taunton's 25, she ran the ball straight in to the 'D' and she managed to get the ball passed the keeper. Throughout the game ECVH played very well and had a very young team with a few players who have only played a few senior matches (Sally Ward and Bryony Greenhow) and a young player who has never played a senior hockey match (Sarah Harwood). Next week ECVH are away against Cheddar.

Ottery St Mary - 0
  ECV Hornets 3rd XI - 3

The ladies 3rds travelled away to play against Ottery St Mary and they had no goalie. At first ECVH seemed asleep and managed to find their feet and got awarded a few short corners, which they scored their 1st goal from. Charlotte Pring pushed the ball out to Ali Pring who struck the goal from the top of the D and the goal keeper saved it then Charlotte managed to find the ball and she scored. Ottery kept fighting back and they got awarded a few short corners but ECVH managed to keep them out of the goal with Ali playing as kicking back. In the 2nd half ECVH were all over Ottery and Donna Carlisle managed to find the goal twice. The 2nd goal for ECVH came from Katie Bowditch running the ball down to the baseline then passing it to the top of the D to Donna who had a clear strike on goal. Ottery got the ball back a few times and took the ball into ECVH's half but the defence managed to get the ball back. ECVH then found Donna in the D again who managed to score her 2nd goal and the 3rd goal for ECVH. At full time Ottery had a number of short corners in a row but the ECVH defence managed to keep the ball from going into the goal.
