Men's C Match Reports 2011-2012

17/03/2012
Teign - 4
  ECV Hornets C - 0

Well although the scoreline suggest we took a bit of a drubbing. That's certainly not the case. John Bissett excelled himself in goal (first appearance between the sticks this season) and the whole midfield and defence played fantastically. Teign scored all 4 of their goals early in the first half but a 0-0 second half was the least hornets deserved.

Man of the match was Jon Bissett.

Taunton C.S. A - 3
  ECV Hornets C - 2

Taunton took the lead when Terry Rudge was skinned at left half and then three players failed to deal with a cross from the Taunton winger and the ball was poached at the back post.

This seemed to fire hornets up. And with in the space of five minutes they went 2-1 up. The first a well worked goal in which practically the whole team made a pass in the attack. Jon bisset was eventually found unmarked and finished the move. The second was again a well worked move. The cross fired in from Sam H and nutmegged two Taunton defenders allowing Terry Rudge to slot home.

The second half was all hornets. Wave after wave of attack. However this left the team complacent on a rare taunton attack. A relative tame strike into the area found a Taunton player (thanks to a large deflection) and the centre forward did the rest.

With time pressing on. Hornets won a long corner. After several passes around the area Jon Bissett was again found unmarked and slotted the winner.

Man of the match was Connor O'farell. An outstanding performance from right back. Defensively and offensively

Isca C - 6
  ECV Hornets C - 1

The scoreline may suggest hornets took a bit of a hammering today. But the match was no where near as one sided as the scoreline reflected.

Hornets had several good chances in the first half but an experienced Isca defence and keeper stood firm. Up the other end Isca did manage to score two well worked goals.

The second was very similar to the first. Peter Rosenwald making some fantastic saves on only his second appearance in goal. Richard Arnold scored a spectacular solo goal to make it the score 3-1 but as Hornets pushed on to try and get themselves back in the game. Isca capitalised and scored three more.

Man of the match was shared between Gary Robinson, Andy Barker and Terry Rudge

ECV Hornets C - 0
  Torbay B - 2

A poor result for hornets today. After yesterday's win. But two games in two days was properly a bit too much for some players. A quiet first half for hornets resulted in them being 2-0 down. The second half was all hornets. But the Torbay keeper made several fantastic saves. Jon Bissett and a Torbay player got yellowed while having some words with each other. And Terry Rudge again found himself in the sinbin for not being able to keep his mouth shut. All in all. 2-0 was a fair result. But Hornets can take heart from a spirited second half.

East Devon B - 1
  ECV Hornets C - 2

Tough game for hornets this week. But a victory which should ease any doubts of relegation. With a few games to go. The team played fantastic. Every man working for each other. Hornets took the lead through a fine strike from Andy barker at a short corner. East Devon scored an equaliser after some poor defending. But hornets retook the lead instantly through a fine team goal scored by richard Arnold.

18/02/2012
ECV Hornets C - 1
  North Devon A - 7

Today. Hornets were simply outplayed by one of the better sides in the league. The one bright moment. A well worked goal from grant Harrison.

11/02/2012
Ottery Crickets B - 2
  ECV Hornets C - 3

Hornets finally managed to find a way to win after a poor run of form.

Ottery quickly took the lead in the game. A break away strike which Peter Rosenwald in his first appearance in goal just managed to miss. Hornets equalised through a well worked short corner routine. Gary Robinson with the tap in. Terry Rudge in a 5 minute cameo managed to pick Nick Cox out on the left hand side of the pitch and with still plenty to do. Cox passed two players before slotting home. Ottery again on the break did make it 2-2 before half time.

In a tightly contested second half. Hornets missed several opportunities in front of goal. But with time running out. In a goal mouth scramble. Louie Rudge managed to flick the ball over the keeper to steal to the win.

Man of the match was shared between the vocal point off all attacks Nick Cox. And the outstanding Andy Barker who thwarted the majority of ottery's attacks.

ECV Hornets C - 1
  Mid Somerset A - 3

Hornets opened the scoring from a penalty flick that barely made the goal from Dave Squires, the flick was awarded. After a short corner routine was prevented from hitting the back of the net from a Louie Rudge flick by the defenders chin. Bryce Clarke made several outstanding saves in the first half but was unfortunate to concede from a Mid Somerset short corner.
Hornets again took the lead from an Andy Barker short corner, however two quick goals from Mid Somerset gave them all three points.

Ashmoor A - 2
  ECV Hornets C - 1

After last week’s heavy defeat hornets were hoping to bounce back against the youthful Ashmoor side.

The first half was all Ashmoor. But the defence and keeper stopped them taking the lead. Bryce Clarke in between the sticks was certainly the stand out player and made a series of first class saves! It must also be said Ashmoor has 10 short corners and they couldn't convert due to the fantastic charging down by Gary Robinson.

In the second half Ashmoor took the lead straight away. From a pass pushed through the middle. Paul Newman seemed to revive a shove from the centre forward which in turn allowed the space for the forward to finish. As the half went on, the game became more stretched and hornets were finding themselves in more space with more time. Andy Barker made a massive tackle 30 yards out. The ball dropped to Terry Rudge who pulled the last defender as he slipped it to Dave Squires who then himself slipped it to Pete Rosenwald to finish into an empty net. A fantastic team goal. Unfortunately Ashmoor did find a winner. A lifted pass into the area deceived everyone and their centre forward powered the ball home. Man of the match was Bryce Clarke.

This weeks performance was a poor one for all involved. In a day where Hornets didn't turn up. Taunton Cs managed to capitalise and run out 3-0 winners. The team was unable to even vote anyone for man of the match.

  East Devon B - 3

As the scoreline suggests. This weeks game was a brilliant hockey match to watch as a spectator and to be involved in.

East Devon took control of the game for the first fifteen minutes. With wave after wave of attack being thwarted by some solid defending and great goalkeeping.

After a tough opening to the game, Hornets started to see more of the ball and impose themselves on East Devon. Hornets took the lead through a brilliantly worked goal in which Rob Winson managed to squeeze a cross through to Jon Bissett who scored with a deft touch past the keeper. Bissett then scored his second of the season moments later. Again Rob Winson picked him out with a cross and a diving Bissett managed to force the ball into the goal.

East Devon did find a way back into the game with a goal from their second short corner.

Shortly after half time East Devon equalised through a well worked attack which left Bryce Clarke no chance as they finished from 5 yards.

With time running out Hornets managed to again take the lead. After Rich Haigh found Dave Squires in acres of space. He drove the length of the pitch before finding Terry Rudge on the edge of the area who swept the ball first time into the bottom corner. East Devon felt the captain was outside the area when he took the shot, but the goal was given.

The controversial goal seemed to spark east Devon into life again. And after a flurry of attacks they managed to equalise in the final minute. All in all. A draw was probably a fair result. Man of the match was John Bissett, mainly because he's grown a Hulk Hogan style goatee.

North Devon A - 3
  ECV Hornets C - 0

After what can only be described as a fantastic start to the season, Hornets C finally lost their first game. The first ten minutes was all hornets! Richard Arnold impressing on debut with some fantastic hustling of defenders and deft touches. After 20 minutes of the half, North Devon took the lead through their captain with a powerful strike.

Despite having all the possession it was North Devon who managed to counter Hornets again and make it 2-0. Which was quickly followed by a third from a short corner. The second half Hornets dominated throughout. But without the inform Rob Winson hornets failed to find the net.

A poor result but a great performance which deserved much more than the final scoreline shows.

Torbay B - 2
  ECV Hornets C - 2

The second away game of the season took hornets away to Torbay. And the first ten minutes were certainly ten to forget.

After giving away a short corner within the first minute. Torbay managed to push the ball into the bottom corner. To take the lead. Shortly after the opening goal, Torbay made it two with another quick attack.

Hornets just did not look at the races. But with some tough battling and desire, they managed to get to half time just two nil down.

The second half was a thousand times better for Hornets and after a series of shots were saved and pushed out by the Torbay keeper. Peter Covington found some space and made it 2-1. With the clock running down, hornets had more and more time and possession on the ball. And after another goal mouth scramble Paul Newman drew the sides level. Unfortunately in the last five minutes hornets couldn't find the winner and they left with just the point!

Men of the match were Peter Covington and Alan Sydneham

15/10/2011
ECV Hornets C - 3
  Yeovil and Sh. B - 1

Hornets C continued their winning start to the season in an impressive display against a strong Yeovil side.

In normal tradition. Hornets came flying out of the traps. Like previous weeks however. Hornets got caught a bit too high up the pitch and Yeovil capitalised with a thunderous reverse strike from the top of the D, that young Bryce Clarke could only push onto the post and the Yeovil forward managed to scrap in the rebound.

But this hornet side doesn't lie down! A double change up front brought on Paul Newman and Louie Rudge. Within two minutes of the change. Paul Newman won the ball from the Yeovil centre back and Louie Rudge beat the keeper to the ball to make it 1-1. This quickly changed to 2-1. With Gary Robinson driving from midfield and putting Dave Squires in to finish another fluent attack from Hornets.

The second half was all about how strong the hornets defence and keeper are! Yeovil produced a wave of attacks on the Hornets goal but some fantastic saves and last ditch defending stopped the equaliser. Rob Winson fresh back from his ankle injury managed to continue his goal scoring form to seal the game. Pinching the ball from the Yeovil right back. He turned, shot and killed the game off!

Man of the match was won by Bryce Clarke for an unbelievable performance in between the sticks!

Mid Somerset A - 0
  ECV Hornets C - 2

Hornets C first away trip of the season took them to a lunch time start in Mid Somerset.

Right from the first whistle, hornets started the stronger side. Jon Bissett and Louie Rudge both harassing the mid Somerset defence and causing them to concede some earlier short corners. Unfortunately the Hornets side were unable to find a goal to highlight the early dominance.

As the first half continued, it became a midfield battle with neither team really looking like scoring. Carl Bergfield did make one outstanding save to keep the score 0-0 at half time.

Ten minutes into the second half. The ever improving George Clegg picked the ball up on the half way line. Beat his marker and managed to win hornets fifth short corner. A well worked short corner resulted in Gary Robinson laying the ball to Andy Barker who scored his third goal in as many games.

The goal broke the back of Mid Somerset and they never looked like finding an equaliser. And with time running out. Richard Haigh managed to thread a pass that beat the whole mid Somerset defence and find Terry Rudge who then found the bottom corner.

2-0 and the outstanding start to the season continued. George Clegg (Ed Sheeran) won the man of the match award for his dynamic running and confidence on the ball.

ECV Hornets C - 6
  Minehead A - 2

The first league game for Hornets C was a home game against Minehead A, and after much chopping and changing during the week amongst the teams, Hornets C finally ended up with 13 players. Hornets started very lively, the great link up play between Nick Cox and Chris Hucker down the left hand side in particular was causing several problems for the Minehead side, as the Hornets side pushed forward and strived to take the lead, Minehead broke away and scored with their first attempt of the game. All this did was inspire the young Hornets side further. A quick break away down the right hand side by Joss Knight and Rob Winson, led to a goal mouth scramble in which the ball finally fell to the skipper Terry Rudge at the top of the area, to flick into the roof of the net. Shortly after the goal another counter attack from Minehead resulted in a straight yellow for the captain, no complaints about it, you can’t just shove players off the ball. 1-1 at half time.

The second half started perfectly for Hornets C, no sooner had Terry Rudge been allowed back on the pitch, he managed to pick out Rob Winson on the edge of the area and after turning his marker, he fired home Hornets second. Mineheads spirits were broken and with that goal hornets scored from two short corners in 10 minutes, one converted by Dave Squires and the other by Rob Winson, 4-1. With ten minutes left to play there was still time for Rob Winson to bag his second hatrick in two games, a fine sole run in which he beat two men resulted in him slotting his third. Minehead did manage to pull a goal back, but Dave Squires killed the game off with his second of the match.

A fine start to the season, and the man of the match award was shared between Andy Barker for another sensational performance at the back and hatrick hero Rob Winson

Isca C - 1
  ECV Hornets C - 1
The Second fixture for the Hornets C side was a nice local derby with our neighbours ISCA, The Hornets side was a very different side from the previous week with no fewer then 7 different faces.

This however didnt stop the trend set in the previous week of the Hornets side coming out all guns blazing, from the very start of the game Hornets enjoyed the vast majority of the possession, and after a series of near misses and last ditch tackles, Hornets finally made the breakthrough. In a rare attack from ISCA a fantastic challenge was made by Richard Haigh in his own area and the ball was distributed quickly from one side of the pitch to the other, as the ball was played off the sideline, ISCA had yet to recover formation, and Callum Pink was able to drift into the penalty area unchallenged, with plenty of time he picked his spot and made it one - nil. Not long after the breakthrough, ISCA managed to force their way into the Hornets box and score an equaliser. In the second half Hornets had the ball for long periods of the game, but the ISCA defence stood firm and even with some fresh legs and a change of position for a number of players, the Hornets side could not break down the experienced ISCA defence. As the game drew to a close there was just enough time for Hornets to have a goal harshly disallowed and the game finished 1-1

In what was a fantastic performance from every player on the pitch, one player stood out more than most, Callum Pink winning the MOTM award for the second week in a row, with over half the team voting for him.

PGSOB - 5
ECV Hornets C - 2
The first fixture of the season saw a preseason trip to Plymouth for the Hornets C side,
a team which had only three players from the previous year and included four under 18s,

Hornets started very fast, winning 4 short corners in the first ten minutes, unfortunately
some unbelievable blocks and a great low safe from the keeper prevented Hornets from taking an early lead. The combination of Callum Pink and Russell Phillips fast passing and determined tackles was providing hornets with the majority of the possession. On a rare counter attack from PGSOB, a ball was threaded between Terry Rudge at centre back at the ever improving goal keeper Caleb Phillips and tapped in at the back post.
As they always say, "one goal normally brings two" and unfortunately straight from the restart PGSOB broke away and found the net for a second time, and with the clock ticking down on the half Terry Rudge gave away a dubious Short Corner, which was then calmly passed into the goal by the PGSOB forward.

The second half very much started the same way as the first, however this time Hornets got the goal they richly deserved, a sweeping move up the pitch resulted in a fantastic finish by Peter Rosenwald. As the half went on, PGSOB had more and more possession and a slick move by their front 3 made it  4-1. Shortly after this goal however came a piece of magic by the young Hornets side, a determined solo run by Russelll Phillips set up Peter Convington to unleash a venomous strike into the roof of the net, 4-2 with 5 minutes left. In the desperation to try and score a third, Hornets found themselves outnumbered at the back and PGSOB scored a fifth. final score 5-2

Considering this was a brand new side, with a new formation, there was plenty of positives to take from the game, and two of the young guns shared the MOTM award, Caleb Phillips for some fantastic saves between the sticks and Callum Pink for his fantastic performance in centre midfield.
