Marlborough - 2 |

Hornets finished the season in style successfully beating Marlborough 3-2 on the last game of the season and finishing fifth place. The home side were on the back foot early when Marlborough scored in the first minute. Hornets quickly replied and after ten minutes when great composure from Nick Dyson allowed him some space to deliver a ball into a D for Chris Dyson to deflect into the net. The home side then quickly started to control the game with some great defensive work from Sam Daymond, Ed Davies, Steve Reed and Tom Webber. Hornets were rewarded for there good work, when a wide ball from Fasey was picked up by Ford who slipped the ball to Chris Dyson for his second.
In the second half the home side had to absorb a lot of pressure as Marlborough started to move the ball well. However, a quick counter was rewarded with a short corner, which Rich Davey slammed into the corner. The away side managed to pull one back, which made for a tense last 10minutes, but Hornets held on for the victory!
Overall it has been a good season for Hornets, Captain Richard Davey, put the great season down the commitment and hard work from all the players. |

ECV Hornets - 3 |

| |
On the penultimate game of the season, Hornets travelled to Bristol side Westbury UB. After a 3-1 defeat in the first leg the away side were keen to get all 3 points this time. From the off, Hornets were much the stronger side and controlled the tempo of the game with some great wide runs from forward Chris Dyson and Ford opening up the Westbury defence in the middle. The excellent work rate and desire eventually paid off when Hornets won a penalty corner about fifteen minutes in. A well rehearsed routine was deflected instinctively into the bottom corner by Dyson. Hornets continued to drive forward well , ten minutes later when another break through came and when Westbury were quickly dispossessed in the middle by defender Webber who then quickly slipped the ball to Ford who then swiftly rounded the defender and slammed it home.
In the second half the home side upped there game and the Hornets defence had to soak up a lot of pressure. With Goalkeeper Adam Broomfield, Sam Daymond, Ed Davies and Steve Reed showing great strength and decision making to maintain a two goal advantage. Mid way through the half Hornets were caught on the counter attack and Westbury pulled on back. Rich Davey and Nick Dyson kept working well in the middle, and Hornets replied relatively quickly. A loose ball in the D was slapped home with venom by Ieuan Davies. Which the allowed the away side to cruise home to a well deserved victory. The last game of the season is against Marlborough. A win will see Hornets claim respectable fifth place. |

Hornets travelled to Swindon this weekend and earned one point in a tight game in which the away side will feel they should have taken more from the game. Hornets started the game well from the start with some great wide play and runs from forwards Tony Ford and Chris Yeo. After about 20mins the break through came, when a delightful aerial from Dave Fasey was picked up by Ford who aggressively drove at goal and shot, this deflected to Ieuan Davies who slammed the ball home from close range. The rest of the half hornets were always the stronger side but failed to extend there lead.
In the second half hornets continued to pressure the Swindon goal with Richard Davey, Tom Lambert and Nick Dyson pulling the strings in the middle. Defensively Sam Daymond pulled off some immense tackles. However the away side inability to convert cost them and in the last ten minutes Swindon managed to equalise. With 1 minute remaining hornets had one last chance, only for Fasey’s drag flick to be emphatically saved by the Swindon goalkeeper. Next weeks opponents are Westbury UB. |

Robinsons A - 5 |
|
| |
In a celebration of goals both sides gave the capacity supporters a veritable feast of scintillating, often flamboyant hockey. Robinson's raced ahead with a far post tap in but an inspired mercurial run by Tony Ford soon brought parity. Unperturbed by Hornets' riposte Robinsons hit back with another well worked goal only to be frustrated by a goal from the hockey magic of Chris Yeo. With both sides displaying what one supporter described as woeful defending the goal glut continued. Up popped Chris Dyson with a diving reverse stick shot, top corner, post and in. Mercifully Yeo decided to give the keeper a chance as he rifled one right down the middle but still managed to score with a cheeky nutmeg. 4-2 to the hosts as half time came.
Second half Robinsons started with some fizz and managed to decrease the deficit to one before Yeo unleashed another to complete a quite spectacular hat trick. Again Robinsons refused to give in squeezing a short corner under the bemused Adam Broomfield, before Rich Davey boomed a shot against the crossbar falling to Ford to volley emphatically past the flailing keeper. One more goal for the visitors before the electric affair came to a close. After being nobbled by a loose Robinsons' shot earlier in the game defender Sam Daymond was quoted as saying 'it was the defenders who won this game' ..Samuel!

This week a depleted Hornets' team travelled away to a strong Bath A side. However, the away side started the much stronger team and soon rushed into a surprise 2-0 lead. Good wide play from Ieuan Davies fired the ball into the opponents D. Tony Ford then received the ball and smartly placed it home. Five minutes later some great link up play from forwards Yeo and Ford, meant that Yeo coolly finished into an open goal.
Bath then upped their game and took the match to Hornets. A powerful drag flick was deflected wide by Webber. Eventually Bath broke through and scored two goals in quick succession. Making the scores level at half time.
After half time Hornets' then looked to try and take the game to their opponents. Andy Richards and Tom Lambert showed some good attacking direction and skills. As Hornets pushed forward in search of a goal they were left venerable at the back and were caught on the counter through a quick break. Bath then added a fourth in the last fifteen minutes through a well placed drag flick. Hornets will feel that they maybe should have taken more from the game. |

In glorious sunshine ECV Hornets first XI played host to Bath Buccs B. The home side started the game much the stronger side, maintaining possession well and controlling the tempo of the game. After ten minutes the home side were rewarded after some tireless play from experienced striker Anthony Ford dispossessed the Buccs defence, he then slipped the ball to Chris Dyson who coolly slotted the ball home.
Five minutes later after some commanding and decisive play from Captain Richard Davey and Nick Dyson in the middle of the park forced the away side to lose the ball. Ford then picked up before playing it through to Chris Yeo eloquently lofted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Right at half time Bath were awarded a penalty corner. The dragflick meant that Goalkeeper Adam Broomfield had to pull off a “wonder save” to keep the two goal advantage.
In the second half Hornets remained the stronger side, with great composure and distribution from the defensive line of Ed Davies, Andy Guerin and Sam Daymond. Also some great wide play from youngster Ieuan Davies.
Both sides had chances but no of which were converted and the game finished 2-0 to the hosts. Next weeks opponents are Bath Buccs A. |

Hornets' maintained their three game winning streak with an emphatic 6-0 win over Firebrands A. Hornets were slow in the first half and went into the break 1-0 up after some cool finishing from Chris Yeo in front of goal. After the break the home side upped the pace, showing much more desire and belief. Great work in the middle from Captain Richard Davey and Nick Dyson made sure that Hornets maintained possession well. After ten minutes some good wide play from Tom Lambert and Ieuan Davies meant Chris Dyson had space to turn and score the second. Five minutes later some strong defending, particularly from Andy Guerin, allowed Hornets to break quickly. A reckless slide tackle on Chris Dyson, meant that Hornets were awarded a penalty flick, which Davey sweetly placed home.
The home side were now in the driving seat and showed great composure, with Chris Dyson completing his hat-trick with two more goals and Yeo adding another. Overall it was a gritty team performance. Goalkeeper Adam Broomfield stated his pleasure at keeping clean sheet especially as next weeks opponents are top of the league Gloucester City.

A hat trick from prolific striker Chris Yeo secured all thee points and a 4-2 win for Hornets against their Welsh opponents Swansea.
The away side started slowly conceding two goals early on. Great saves from Adam Broomfield and some well timed tackles from Sam Daymond and Steve Reed kept the deficit to 2 goals. Towards the end of the half the team showed glimpses of great play with particularly strong wide play from Tom Lambert. The team went into half time much the stronger side.
After the break the Hornets side came out firing on all cylinders taking advantage of the uncertain defending from Swansea. This allowed Chris Yeo to show some panache and coolly finish three times in front of goal. Goal scoring veteran Tony Ford scored the fourth to secure a win for the travelling side. Captain Richard Davey expressed a delight with the win stating ‘This win shows the team have great character’. |

Exeter University 3rd XI - 1 |
|
| |
On a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon Hornets 1st team played host to Exeter University 3rds. In the first half Hornets appeared to be the stronger side. Midway through the period some tireless work from Andy Richards down the right hand side, led to the midfielder slipping the ball to Chris Yeo who received it with his back to goal before cleverly working the angle to slot the ball past the flailing goalkeeper. Hornets then soaked up some pressure with some commanding tackles from Steve Reed and a fantastic save from a drag flick by Goalkeeper Adam Broomfield.
After the break the match remained very close with Captain Richard Davey and Tom Lambert holding strong in the middle. The second opportunity came with less than twenty minutes to go when a decisive short corner was slammed home with venom from Nick Dyson, who was later sin binned for talking back to the umpires in which time the university managed to pull one back. But Hornets pulled together well as a team, and some excellent wide play from Sam Daymond and Ieuan Davies kept the home side in the lead to win the game. Hornets will see this as a valuable three points as they head into the mid season break.

For the third time this season Hornets drew 4-4 in a league encounter. Hornets opened the lead early on as a short corner was clinically dispatched by Rich Davey. The away side should really have gone on to dominate the half but instead went to sleep in a scrappy spell. Wiltshire-based Marlborough equalised during this period. Hornets re-took the lead through Chris Yeo shortly before half-time.
The Devon side knew that if they upped their game then a comfortable victory would be theirs. However, what transpired was a terrible 10 minute spell in which Hornets completely lost their composure and the hosts notched three goals. The re-introduction of the experienced Andy Guerin steadied the visitors down and they began to get back into the game. Rich Davey pulled one back and soon after man of the match Yeo equalised after a good turn and emphatic finish. Hornets were dominating and very nearly got the winner as another powerfully struck Yeo effort hit the post.

Westbury and UB - 3 |
|

Hornets' fell to their second successive league defeat. The effort by the home side was much in evidence but they lacked a little bit of quality on the ball compared to their opposition. Consequently, Westbury controlled much of the play in the early stages and duly struck the opening goal. Hornets felt a free hit should have been awarded for an uncontrolled lifting of the ball into Nick Dyson but there was no free hit and the away side scored. Westbury added a well worked second capitalising on some sloppy play by Hornets at the back. Hornets got a goal back before half-time. The Hornets' goal was equally as dubious as the visitors opener as Ieuan Davies looked to have obstructed the defender before going on a great run and placing an excellent pass to Rich Davey. Davey drew the keeper before finding Chris Dyson for a finish on the stretch into an unguarded net.
Both sides had further chances in the second period. Hornets' will particularly lament the poor execution of their short corners throughout the game which yielded no goals. As the game reached its final stages Hornets put more and more pressure on the away side spending long spells in the opposition territory. However, few clear cut chances were created. Westbury added a third late on with a good deflection into the net from a well directed crash ball into the D.

A Hornets side missing several players were well beaten against high flying Truro but can come away with many positives after a spirited display. Truro took the lead after a short corner strike took a deflection off defender Tom Webber and over the keeper. They doubled their advantage with another short corner which was tapped in at the far post. Both sides were creating chances and it was Hornets who pulled a goal back towards the end of the half with a Chris Yeo straight strike from a short corner.
The Cornish side scored at regular intervals in the second half and had further chances. However, it was not all one way traffic as Hornets also created a number of decent openings. Truro’s goals came through another short corner which squirmed under the keepers pads before being tapped in and two good driving runs down the right hand side which were also finished off easily. Hornets best chances came through a Yeo deflection from a George Turnball cross and a powerful strike from captain Rich Davey which the keeper saved without knowing too much about it. The hosts had a player sin-binned late on but Hornets could not take advantage. There were fine performances from both Roo Rosenwald and Richard Sambrook stepping up to 1st XI level. The final result was a little harsh on Hornets but the hosts ran out deserved winners to continue their push for promotion. |

For the second consecutive home match Hornets finished with a 4-4 draw. It did not look that way in the early stages as a calamitous start by the home side saw them fall 3 goals behind in a little over 5 minutes. Hornets' finally regrouped and put some moves together themselves as the half wore on and by half-time it was even. Hornets making the most of their penalty corners by scoring with all three. Firstly, Nick Dyson set up Ieuan Davies for a far post tap in and then after the initial shots were saved top-scorer Chris Dyson put away 2 goals on the rebound.
The second half was an even affair with Swindon enjoying a little more of the possession but with both sides having their chances. It was the away side that re-took the lead as the initial shot took a deflection and rolled agonisingly into the net. The hosts equalised after a Nick Dyson goalbound effort hit a Swindon foot. Captain Rich Davey scored with the resultant penalty stroke. Hornets went close to scoring again with Chris Dyson nutmegging the keeper only to see the ball roll just passed the left post. Swindon also had a great chance but the forward could not connect with a pass from the right hand side. Hornets were then reduced to 10 late on as Tom Webber was sin-binned for a deliberate foot as the Wiltshire side looked to score on the breakaway.

Hornets’ travelled to Bristol at the weekend and earned a hard fought win in an eventful match. The visitors opened the scoring with Ed Davies finding Chris Dyson down the right hand side. Dyson produced an excellent flick over the advancing keeper. Hornets’ doubled their advantage with Dyson grapping a second from a ball crossed in from the right. Robinsons were a constant danger on the breakaway and responded well. They pulled one back after drawing the Hornets keeper and passing to an unmarked forward for an easy finish. Hornets’ were then reduced to 10 players as keeper Broomfield was sin binned for taking out the Robinsons forward who broke clean through. Hornets' held out superbly without a keeper though there was some poor finishing from the hosts especially from short corners. Robinsons did find an equaliser when Hornets were back up to 11 after an attacking short corner broke down.
Hornets' had their best spell early in the second period scoring three goals. They took the lead through Tony Ford and added an excellent fourth with Ford drawing a defender before setting up Chris Yeo on the breakaway for a cool finish over the diving keeper. The quality of Hornets finishing was the difference and Yeo added Hornets fifth and his second with a fine run and clinical finish into the side netting. Hornets conceded a soft goal midway through the period with a good reverse stick shot for the Bristol side. They had to survive a few anxious moments including a sin-binning for defender Ed Davies for a stick tackle. Although Hornets have played better this season they will be glad to come away with victory in an error strewn game. |

Hornets' played out an exciting and high scoring game at the weekend with a battling draw against high flying Team Bath. The visitors opened the scoring early on. Hornets' equalised with a straight strike short corner through Richard Davey. Keeper Broomfield made a number of good saves to keep the hosts on terms.
Bath re-took the lead early in the second half with a shot from the left hand side that went in off Broomfield's pad. Hornets' responded with another equaliser as an excellent move between Steve Reed and Rich Davey led to an easy finish for Tony Ford. As so often in the game Buccs responded well to the set back and scored through a drag-flick short corner. For the third time in the game the hosts equalised. A short corner was deflected up and Chris Yeo tapped the ball across for Ed Davies to score into an open net from just a foot out. Hornets' quickly took the lead for the first time soon after. Chris Yeo firing in an excellent strike. Bath equalised late on with another fine drag-flick short corner before Hornets were reduced to 10 for a deliberate infringement by Yeo. The Devon side held on to secure a hard earned and deserved draw.

Hornets’ fell to their second defeat in succession at Bath on Saturday. The visitors were unlucky to grab a share of the points in what was a very even contest. Bath started the stronger but once Hornets got into the game they created the two best chances of the half. A Chris Yeo cross was met by Chris Dyson at the near post. The goalbound deflection was superbly saved by the Buccs keeper. A minute later a good passing move found Dyson in front of goal with just the keeper to beat. Dyson placed the ball agonisingly wide of the right hand post. The rest of the half saw few chances for either side as defences remained on top.
The second half followed in similar fashion with few clear cut chances. Goalkeeper Adam Broomfield making a couple of strong saves and the Hornets stoppers’ counterpart in the Buccs goal also smothering well on a couple of occasions. It looked as though a single goal would win the encounter and it was the hosts who scored with a little over 10 minute to go. Hornets lost possession on the right hand side. Buccs quickly transferred the ball to an unmarked forward in the D who then struck a good shot just inside the post. Despite Hornets then having a numerical advantage after a Buccs forward deliberately tried to break up play they were unable to create a clear cut chance to end in frustrating defeat.

Hornets' travelled to Bristol based Firebrands at the weekend and came away with an emphatic victory to move into 4th in the league. The scoreline flattered the hosts as Hornets incisive attacking play created many chances throughout. Hornets' opened the scoring after Andy Guerin made a terrific run from centre back to set up man of the match Tony Ford for an excellent deflected finish at the back post. Firebrands soon equalised with a fine straight strike short corner goal. Hornets soon re-took the lead after a scrambled goal was eventually tucked away by Ieuan Davies. A neat move which saw Martin Pearce winning a short corner down the left hand side allowed Rich Davey to fire a straight strike short corner into the backboard for 3-1 at halftime. It was well deserved with Hornets feeling unlucky that a couple of penalty strokes had not been given.
The Devon side started a little sluggishly in the second period, however, they soon extended their lead as a terrific move on the breakaway led to Davies setting up Chris Dyson for an excellent finish past the onrushing keeper. Hornets' added a 5th midway through the half as captain Rich Davey stole possession and set up Dyson for another clinical finish. Hornets' got back to winning ways with a hard fought victory in a scrappy encounter against Swansea Bay. The sides shared a similar style of play and appeared to cancel each other out. The keeper stick tackled Dyson and was sent to the sin bin. However, Hornets were unable to capitalise on the extra man advantage. The half ended goalless.

For the third time Swansea went down to 10 for a stick tackle followed by Hornets skipper Richard Davey, also for a stick tackle, and Ed Davies for hitting the ball away as the visitors looked to take a free hit. Swansea made the most of the numerical advantage by equalising with a good reverse stick strike after concerted pressure. Hornets held out and the game looked to be heading for a draw. Hornets opening league game in Premier Division 2 ended in heavy defeat against local rivals Exeter University B. Both sides were promoted last season but it was the Uni side that made the better adjustment to the higher league. Hornets can have no complaints with the scoreline as the students ran out comfortable winners. They opened the scoring midway through the half as Hornets lost possession and a quick breakaway led to an easy finish inside the near post. The home side doubled their advantage after a harsh short corner decision went against Hornets and the direct strike was placed past Adam Broomfield in goal. The half ended with the Uni side 2 goals up but it would have been more but for some excellent saves by Broomfield.
Hornets knew that they would need to improve considerably in the second period, however, they continued to play poorly gifting the ball to the opposition all too easily. The hosts soon added 2 further goals with well worked moves finished at the back post. Hornets were then gifted a goal as a loose cross-field pass found Chris Dyson to beat the keeper from close range. The Uni added another from a short corner before Hornets doubled their tally through Ieuan Davies with one of few good moves for the away side. The Uni completed the scoring with a drag flick short corner for a well deserved victory. |
