ECV Hornets - 1 |

ECV Hornets were beaten in their 1st round EH Mixed Trophy game 4-1 by Bude hockey club. Hornets turned up to the game with an air of confidantes thinking we would just turn up and win this game, and to start with this looked like this my happen with a great attacking start but were unable to beat the Bude keeper who made some solid saves. But the over confidantes was to be punished by Bude as they scored a breakaway goal. Shorty followed by them converting a short corner to make it 2-0 at the break. The second half started much the same and hornets found themselves 4 – 0 down, both goals coming from Budes fast counter attacking which hornets struggled to deal with. Hornets managed to get a goal back 15 minutes from the end from Stephen Skinner but Bude safely saw the game out. |

Dart - 1 |

ECV Hornets started their EH Mixed Trophy preparation with a friendly game playing Dart HC on a cold but sunny Sunday afternoon in Cullompton. After a nervy 10 minutes of play where both teams were still getting used to their mixed line-ups, Hornets took the lead with a Penalty corner in the 10th minute from Karen Tinley. Then after some good play from Hornets Roo Rosenwald scored two reverse goals in quick succession mid way thought the half. Dart then had some good chances to pull a couple goals back but goalkeeper Jolene Spencer made it difficult for the Dart attack to punish a stretched Hornets defence. The half ended 3-0
Dart started the stronger of the two teams in the seconded half but the home side soon punished them on the break with goals from Kate Baker and David Fasey early in the half. Dart finally converted a penalty corner to awarded them a goal for their efforts. But Hornets increased the lead back to 5 goals when Jolene Spencer came on up front to slot the ball in the goal from the back post. Final score 6-1

Cheltenham - 4 |
|
| |
On Sunday hornets played host to a strong Cheltenham mixed side. The travelling side showed their strength scoring in the first five minutes and then adding a second mid way through the first half. The scoreline could have been higher if it was not for strong defending from Nick Holway, Tom Webber and Laura Newcombe.
After a reshuffle hornets came out the blocks faster in the second half and immediately scored on the deflection after the initial reverse shot from Richard Davey. Hornets then dodged a few bullets and managed to keep the score to 2-1. Great work in the middle from Roo Rosenwald, Carly Veale and Ieuan Davies kept hornets in the game. As well as some strong wide play from sisters Becky and Jess Maltby.
At the turn of the hour the away side then added a couple more and then the game was beyond reach for the home side. Hornets mixed side will feel the 4-1 defeat was probably a fair result in the end. |

ECV Hornets Mixed XI - 3 |

| |
Hornets looked to have a tough encounter away to Gloucestershire based Newent in the 3rd round of the Mixed HA Trophy and so it proved as the hosts won it in extra time with a golden goal. The home side started much the stronger and were soon ahead with an excellent passing move which led to an easy finish. They continued to dominate and added a second after a good move around the right hand side and cross was unfortunately deflected in off Hornets Adam Broomfield. Keeper Sam Parsons then kept the visitors in it with a superb stick save from a powerful reverse stick strike. The hosts began to tire towards the end of the half allowing Hornets more control of the game. However, they were not able to find the back of the net from a couple of chances and short corner routines.
Hornets changed things around a little at half time to create more in the opposition half and knew if that they could stay in touch they would be the stronger side towards the end of the game. Unfortunately the away side had a disastrous start as a completely unopposed run into the D led to a smart flicked finish. This did not seem to dishearten Hornets who then largely took control of the game with Newent relying on the breakaway. Hornets scored 2 goals in quick succession with superb reverse stick finishes by Rich Davey and then pushed hard for the equaliser but it was Newent who had the next chance on the breakaway. A good break led to the ball being passed around the goalkeeper for what seemed like an easy tap in at the far post only for defender Karen Tinley to make a diving clearance on the line. Hornets continued to press but ironically it was from a defensive 16 that the equaliser was found with under a minute remaining. Defender Martin Pearce struck the 16 down the middle of the pitch for an unmarked Kate Baker to collect and beat the keeper one-on-one.
The game then went into golden goal extra time with Hornets in the ascendancy. Though the game was all over within 2 minutes as Newent caught Hornets in possession on the edge of their own 23 metre line. The forward rounded another defender before striking a powerful reverse stick effort. The ball was travelling well wide though another Newent forward was no hand to turn the ball into the net.

Bude Mixed XI - 1 |

ECV Hornets Mixed XI - 2 |
|
| |
Hornets played at Bude in the 2nd Round of the National HA Mixed Trophy and came away with a hard fought and narrow victory. Hornets started brighter but were unable to convert possession into many shots on goal. Bude responded well and dominated the middle part of the half. The home side put the ball in the back of the net however the whistle had already gone for an infringement. Bude continued to look the more threatening and missed out on a few short corner opportunities before finally succeeding. The ball was slipped to the near post for a neat finish which Sam Parsons in goal was unable to keep out. Hornets responded to the setback by changing the formation. This paid almost immediate dividends as a ball stuck into the D by Steve Skinner was met by Martyn Harvey just before the onrushing keeper. Harvey deflected the ball square to Emily Michem for an emphatic finish past the covering defender on the goalline.
Hornets display in the 2nd period earnt them victory as they dominated large spells of possession and tightened it up at the back considerably through defenders Kat Jones, Sam Daymond and Martin Pearce. The hosts were restricted to just the single short corner and a couple of half chances throughout the half. At the other end Hornets had created numerous chances to win the game. The goal came fairly early in the half. An excellent run and strike by Harry Gibson was turned into the net at the far post by Karen Tinley. Hornets could have added further goals in the half but in the end settled for a single goal victory and await the third round draw.

Gloucester City Mixed - 3 |

|
Hornets' pulled off a surprise result in the opening round of the HA Mixed Trophy on Sunday. The last time the sides met in this competition it was a resounding victory for the visitors but they came up against a more determined Hornets side this time around. Hornets created the majority of chances in the opening period of the game, however, finishing let them down as they were unable to take the lead. Although Gloucester forays into the Hornets D were rare their finishing was more clinical. They opened the scoring with a good strike after a defensive mistake and soon doubled the advantage.
Hornets made a slight change to their line-up in the second half and this seemed to pay dividends. Skipper Steve Skinner soon reduced the arrears and then got Hornets back level with two goals in the space of three minutes. Hornets took the lead for the first time in fortuitous circumstances. An attempted Gloucester clearance was blocked by Hornets' Lucy Harrison who saw the block rebound into the net past the bemused keeper. The away side did not lay down and forced keeper Sam Parsons into a number of good saves before finding an equaliser. Hornets winner was a well struck effort by Scott Struthers to complete an excellent victory.

Hornets - 1 |
|
|
Blueballers - 0 |
|
|
Hornets made it four wins out of four in the mixed summer league and four clean sheets as they beat the experienced Blueballers. It was the toughest test of the summer thus far and Hornets can count themselves as fortunate to gain the win. The only goal of the game came early on as Emily Mitchem, on a scoring streak this summer, finished emphatically after her initial shot was blocked.
Hornets had numerous chances to add to their tally but were thwarted by a good display by the goalkeeper and a poor final pass. Blueballers, for their part, controlled more of the possession and created numerous short corners throughout the game. It was perhaps their inability to finish from these short corners that cost them the game. Hornets were also indebted to goalkeeper Harry Gibson who had an excellent game.

Hornets third victory of the mixed summer league came against Ottery. It was a more competitive game than the one sided scoreline suggests. Ottery attacked with numbers which left them over exposed defensively to Hornets more incisive attacks. Hornets opened the scoring through Emily Mitchem and despite further chances the score remained 1-0 at half time.
The next goal would be crucial and it was Hornets who scored early on through Rich Davey after good work from Claire Hobbs and Steve Skinner down the left. This seemed to dispirite Ottery and allowed Hornets to run in 4 further goals through another for Rich Davey and a hat-trick for Skinner.

Hornets won their second mixed league game of the summer against the youngsters of Isca. This was always likely to be a close game and so it proved. Hornets maintained most of the possession and created the majority of chances, however, Isca were always dangerous on the breakaway and might have undone Hornets on a number of occasions.
Hornets took the lead in the opening half as Rich Davey delayed his shot before lifting the ball over the prone keeper and into the roof of the net. The Isca keeper would go on to produce a number of fine saves throughout the game to keep his side in the contest. Isca shot narrowly wide on a couple of occasions as they threatened to overrun Hornets on the break.
The lead was doubled midway through the second half as Claire Hobbs struck a shot low and hard into the net from a short corner. Hornets held out for the rest of the game relatively comfortably to secure the win.

Hornets - 3 |

Geckos - 0 |
|
|
This was the first match in the 2008 mixed summer league. Given the general rustiness of the players it turned into an entertaining encounter and also competitive as many of the players involved were pitted against team-mates. Hornets started the brighter and were able to control most of the possession, as they did throughout the game, though early chances were squandered. Geckos were restricted to a few dangerous breakaways. Hornets took the lead half way through after a good pass to Rich Davey saw his shot partially blocked by keeper Carl Bergfeld. Emily Mitchem followed the ball in to tap home from close range. Geckos responded well to this setback but there spell of pressure saw little in the way of clear cut chances.
The next goal would be crucial to the result with both sides having chances before Hornets doubled their lead. A free hit outside the D eventually found its way to Steve Skinner, and after delaying his shot, he struck the ball well into the corner over the prone goalkeeper. Hornets added a third towards the end of the game as Skinner set up Roo Rosenwald for an easy tap in. The scoreline was a little harsh on Geckos who were always in the game but could not create enough clear cut chances to register a goal.

Wimborne Wayfarers Mixed XI - 1 |

Hornets started the game at a fast pace and were pinging the ball around which caught the visitors off guard, Hornets first goal was scored in the 5th minute by Jess Rosenwald after Claire Hobbs played her in to drill the ball in to the goal. Hornets kept up the pressure and won a series of short corners from which Hornets second and third goals came which were, both deflected in by Sam Daymond.
Wimborne Wayfarers came out in the second half strongly and scored a well worked goal within five minutes of the restart. Wimborne kept the pressure up on Hornets with Harry Gibson making a couple of great saves. Hornets finally managed to score on the on break when Stephen Skinner beat the last defender and went around the keeper to push the ball in to the open goal. After this goal Hornets settled in to some good passing which resulted in Hornets final goal which was scored by Jess Rosenwald when she picked the ball up on the far post to tap in. |
