Under 12 Boys

ECV Hornets & White Eagles joined forces to enter an U12 boys' team. They played well and managed a draw against Exe, with George Hawkins opening the scoring. Although they were unable to secure a win, they only lost the by the occasional goal, with Byron Oxford made some superb saves & Oscar Devine-Wright keeping the attack at bay. Walter Rosenwald equalled the score with Isca, but the boys were unable to prevent them from scoring again. There was good teamwork between them all, including young Jonathan Newman, Charlie Adams, Marcus Simmons & Joe Horsey.

The next game was versus a strong Ashmoor resulted in a narrow 2-1 defeat. The following game was against was against Teignmouth. Hornets were much the stronger side and were unlucky not to score with Oscar Devine Wright showing some moments of brilliance. The last game was against Exe which resulted in a narrow 1-0 loss. The day was enjoyed by all and some great was played by all the sides.

Under 12 Boys

In glorious sunshine at Exeter University the under 12 boys gave themselves a good showing against some tough opposition. With the bare minimum numbers of players the team pulled together well showing glimpses of great play. Simon Foxford made some excellent darting runs forward, as well as Frank Rosenwald who pulled off a string of fine saves on a number of occasions. Also 'Player of the Day' Alfie Devine-Wright produced many well executed tackles to help the team after long periods of sustained pressure, working well with his defensive partner Toby Whitehead. Overall the day was a great success, with fun had by all!

Under 10 Boys

The Under 10s were very depleted and borrowed players from other clubs to fulfil their games and get some great hockey experience as well. First up were a well organised Ashmoor and a 0-0 result was achieved. Oscar Devine-Wright worked hard in defence and Dan Hoaen tried to control the midfield with his strength. a 1-1 draw with Bovey Tracey followed and then a 3-0 loss to a well drilled Isca side.
Not to be downhearted, the youngsters kept battling and beat Exe 2-0 and then Teignmouth 4-1. Henry Mort scored 2 goals and Daniel Hart notched one.
For most of the players it was their first experience of game play and fought very well throughout.

Under 14 boys

ECV Hornets under 14s had their first outing of the season in the Devon League at Exeter University. Fielding 5 under 12 boys, the youngsters acquitted themselves well to full pitch hockey. First game was against the strong Ashmoor side which ended 0-0. Ollie and Ben Clarke worked tirelessly all over the pitch and were well supported by Sam Tapp and Darren Paul.

Next up were a very strong Isca A who eased to a 3-0 win over the young Hornets. Tom Dornon,Simon Foxford and Jethro Clark did their best to hold back the opposition. Ben Roberts & Ben Hawkins had some great touches on the left wing whilst Chris Tancock worked hard up front.

Not to be deterred, Hornets continued to play some excellent Hockey and at times were very thankful to the new keeper Brice Clark for some excellent saves.

With his man of the match performance and excellent team work throughout, the remaining games against Okehampton, Isca B and Plymouth Marjons all ended 0-0.

Great experience for all of the players and thanks also to Katie Hawkins who had her first taste of umpiring.

Under 14 boys

ECV Hornets juniors closed their season in fine style both on and off the pitch.

The Under 14 boys team went to Exeter and won all of their games comprehensively with some superb alround play.First opponents were TDEX and The Hornets flew into their goalfest with 4 goals in 4 minutes. Matt Mitchems first shot was saved but Callum Pink scored from the rebound.James glover was next on the scoresheet from a short corner and then young Sam Williams making his debut at this age group scored from another short corner. Mitchem added the 4th. Glover and then Sam Tapp added more as Hornets dominated. Glover struck again and the prolific Mitchem added 2 more to make the final score 9-0
Ottery Crickets gave the Hornets a sterner test but they were not to be denied for long as first Max Ansell and then Glover opened the scoring. Mitchem added a third andf it was only down to the heroic Crickets keeper that the scoreline was not higher. Mitchem added 2 more before Harry Everett scored his first of the day to seal a 6-0 win.
The teams met again and Hornets experimented with playing positions and despite winning just 1-0 against TDEX they played some neat attractive hockey. Player of the day Callum Pink was showing tremendous speed and awareness.
Fionally the game against Crickets was another 6-0 win with goals from Joss Knight, Mitchem 3, Williams and Pink. Keeper Rich Hooper didnt have much to do on the day but what he he did do was confident. George Clegg played well throughout and showed real determination.

Under 14 boys

ECV Hornets Under 14 boys pulled off a brilliant hat trick of wins in the latest round of matches in their Devon League.

First up were a young but hard working Otter Crickets. Hornets took time to settle and seemed more content to play scrappy possession hockey and got caught out too often, Eventually the pressure played off. From a short corner, James Glovers shot was saved by the keeper who then scarmbled away another shot to the waiting George Clegg to sweep the ball home for a 1-0 win
A weakened Taunton Vale then succumbed to a sweet Glover strike from a short Corner to earn another 1-0 win. Jack Hampton, Max Ansell and Player of the day Sam Tapp combined well but the passing moves were still not truly allowing the Hornets to dominate play.

Jon Hoaen and Joss Knight and Callum Pink in defence worked hard to keep out the threatening Vale attacks.

Final game was against local rivals Isca who had shown earlier that they worked very well as a fluent passing team. With Alex Lavallin and Harry Everett and Darren Paul working hard on the wings, Hornets managed to match their opponents and at times pin them back. On rare attacks, keeper Rich Hooper was defiant with good support from Caleb Phillips. Hornets pushed and should have scored from close range. The ball rebounded to Ansell on the top of the D and his first time shot was too strong for the Isca keeper. The boys continued their hard work and proved to them selves the worth of teamwork with the 1-0 win.

BOYS U16S TOURNAMENT REPORT

Vs Isca   2-0
A very young and seemingly inexperienced Hornets team had the perfect start with a fantastic 2-0 victory over Isca.  The Hornets team dominated the play in the first half of the match with some great sequences of passing.  The first goal game just after 5 minutes where a strong Hornets attack from the midfield saw the Isca defence wide open for Max Ansell to power the ball passed the keeper.  The second half was a more even affair as Isca seemed to step up a gear.  Some great work by the Isca defence stopped the waves of Hornets pressure, who in pushing up let Isca attack on the break.  The Hornets defence held strong though and with Richard Hooper as keeper, they kept Isca strikers at bay.  The second goal came late in the game after a spell of pressure from Isca.  After a super tackle, Roo Rosenwald passed the ball forward and with great skill and link-up play with James Glover, Matthew Mitchem swept the ball into the oppositions goal.

Vs Ottery  0-2
Hornets start 22 September, 2011 idfield, but the Ottery team were well drilled and much quicker than the youngsters and were soon dominating.  The defence looked strong though, with Jon Hoaen, Darren Paul and Sam Tapp being supported by Roo Rosenwald and Caleb Phillips in goal making fantastic saves.  After 10 minutes, Hornets still had a foothold in the game and with Jack Hampton and Max Ansell keeping their shape in midfield; they were able to make some breaks up pitch.  The first goal against Hornets came after a short corner for Ottery. A well constructed manoeuvre and a fortunate looping reverse shot saw the ball lofted into the goal.  The second goal came later into the second half, where the Hornets defence were caught outnumbered at the back.  Although persistent and strong in their tackling, Ottery sneaked the ball behind the defence and into the bottom corner.

Vs North Devon  1-0
The first half was a very even affair with the ball speeding from one end of the pitch to the other.  Although the majority of the shots belonged to the Hornets attack, some good goal-keeping from North Devon kept it a clean sheet at half time.  After the half time team talk, Hornets came out all guns blazing and put all pressure on the North Devon goal.  With Roo Rosenwald making fast breaks from the back and Will Squires and Richard Hooper supporting from both wings.  After taking the ball past three North Devon defenders with great skill, Roo slotted the ball under a sliding keeper to get on the score sheet. With some amazing team play by the Hornets forwards, Matthew Mitchem and James Glover and some aggressive midfield play from Max Ansell and Jack Hampton, Hornets were unlucky not to score more goals, but a 1-0 victory was enough to get through to the next round.

Devon Junior League

The ECV Hornets Under 14 boys have started their games in the new Devon Junior Leagues. The opening game was against a spirited and hard working Otter Crickets. Hornets dominated the game with Jack Hampton and Max Ansell combining well in the middle to set up the attacks. Jack Greenall worked hard on the wing and an early cross set up the first goal which was ended by the former keeper George Clegg. Hornets pressure eventually secured the 2-0 win when Matt Mitchem drilled in a shot from the top of the D.

Next game was against a very skilled Taunton Vale. Determined defence from Jon Hoaen, Joss Knight and Callum Pink constantly stopped the Vale attacks.Rich Hooper in goal made save after save as he stood up to the barage of shots. The 0-0 result felt like a victory for the Hornets. The hard work took its toll as they slipped to a 1-0 loss to Isca. For some of the Hornets, this was their first experience of full pitch play and as the season progresses so will their confidence and fitness.

Hornets under 16 boys started there season with a winning start over local ravels Isca, 0-0 at half time the young hornets broke the dead lock when Matthew Mitchems’ fantastic top of D strike found the inside post to make it 1-nil, and was soon increased by fellow strike partner Jim Cooper to make it 2-nil.  Mitchem got his 2nd to make it 3-0 and Roo Rosenwald slotted home a loose ball in the D to make it 4-0. Isca got there award for hard work and pulled a goal back but the goal hungry hornets side added another when Sam Daymond converted a short corner.

Hornets 2nd game also started well when Jack Hampton scored in his debut in a Hornets jersey, but there attempts to play attacking hockey and score freely as they did in the last game saw them concede two brake away goals and the determined North Devon side kept there led to the end.

In there last game of the day Hornets knew a win would only do and in a brilliant game the young Will Sqiures scored with a wonderful shoot form the top of the D to beat the strong Ottery keeper.

30/03/08

A beautiful spring day greeted the ECV Hornets juniors as they played out the last round of their respective Devon League games.

Under 16 girls played at Exeter University and were topping the league as play began.

The girls hit by withdrawals due to Ten Tors training didnt get things their own way and lost their 2 opening games against Taunton and Otter Crickets 1-0. In both games, the girls were unlucky with the shots and fully deserved not to lose the games. Next were Teignmouth and an Emily Mitchem goal secured a 1-0 win. Goals were still hard to come by and it was still the case when they drew 0-0 with Isca, Final game of the day was against 2nd placed Plymouth. 2 Mitchem goals secured a 2-2 draw and also gave her the vote as player of the day.

A mixed bag of results and they now await the final league table placings.
Meanwhile at Exeter School the under 13 boys had 2 teams battling away. Withdrawals from 2 other teams meant that fixtures were cut.

The A team started with a 1-1 draw with Isca. A poor start and mix up in defence saw an early goal conceded. But slowly the boys found their form and a Jack Greenall shot pulled it level with 2 mins to go. Such was the change if form that they could have won the game as they piled on the pressure.
Next were the eventual league winners- Ashmoor who really showed what they are capable of with a convincing 3-0 win. Jon Hoaen and Max Ansell battled hard in defence but could ny keep out the Devon Champions.

Last League game was against Exe. Matt Mitchem opened the scoring but the team still were nt playing the passing game they are capable of. Words of advice from the coach and soon it began to flow. Greenall added a 2nd before Mitcxhem added 2 more. Ollie Maltby, Sam Tapp and James Glover worked tirelessly in support. Hoaen got the player of the day vote.

The B team opened up with a 2-0 win over Exe with Will Sobczak scoring 2 well taken goals. Darren Paul, Player of the day-Nixie Acfield and Dougie Allan worked put in great performances with Joss Knight performing heroics in defence.
Taunton Vale provided the other League game and they could do nothing to prevent a 3-0 loss despite some great saves by keeper George Clegg.
These boys have all improved a great deal since the opening games back in October. Many of them will now leap up to Under 14 for next season and with it new challenges of full pitch hockey.

And finally, with energy still left the 2 teams played out a friendly with the A team coming out 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Maltby.

09/03/08
The ECV Hornets under 14s girls and boys played their last round of matches in this seasons Devon League.
The girls event was again decimated by the no show of 2 teams leaving the Hornets to face local rivals White Eagles. Despite the pouring rain, there was a good flowing game and goals from Alice Daymond(2) Lucy Cridland (3) Louisa Squire and Abbie Hitt ensured a 7-0 win. Player of the day was Abbie Wilson-Date.
The result caps a fine season and leaves the girls as winners of the league. A fine performance as most of the team are still playing at under 13 level.
The Boys had a busier time at Exeter School with 2 games against both Ashmoor and Dart.
First up were Ashmoor and a thrilling game was decided by a cool finish by Matt Mitchem. The team started to settle but again had to rely on the one goal to sneak a 1-0 win against Dart. Jack Greenall scoring from the edge of the D.
So second game against Ashmoor. The boys were beginning to find their passing game. player of the day Max Ansell worked tirelessly at the back supported very well by Seb Acarnley and James Bevan. Goals from Ollie Maltby, Greg Jolly and Mitchem secured the win before a late consolation goal from Ashmoor. Final game of the morning saw the boys ease to a 4-0 win over Dart, Scorers were Maltby, Greenall, Greg Jolly and Nixie Acfield.
The midfield duo of Caleb Phillips & James Glover worked hard to support the team while goalie Rich Hooper produced the saves when needed.. These set of results mean that they top this group and finish in 5th place overall. Not bad as again this team is virtually all Under 13s so lots of promise shown.

ECV Hornets entered 2 teams to the Yazoo National Minis tournament and came away with heads held very high after a long day.
The A team took one look at the draw, Gulped and then got down to playing. First opponents sadly withdrew so a makeshift Isca Team provided the opposition and was a good workout and time to iron out the bad habits. The 0-0 result was to be expected as both sides were using it as a trial run. Next up were Blundells School. A busy end to end game and Hornets were guilty of not passing when needed. Chances were not taken and eventually Blundells broke away to score a scrappy goal to seal a 1-0 win. James Glover and Matt Mitchem up front worked hard and were ably supported by James Bevan Nixie Acfield and Jack Greenall in midfield.
So to the final group game and a win was vital if they were to qualify for the cup playoffs.
A quiet start slowly turned to Hornets dominance. Jon Hoaen and Max Ansell cooly seeing off any attack by Plymouth Marjons before Greenall scored with a shot which slipt between the keepers legs. the team began to relax and play some excellent hockey- much to the joy of the coach and parents. Further goals from Hoaen, Ansell Greenall and Mitchem saw an emphatic 5-0 win.
So into the cup play offs and next up Exeter school. Tougher opposition, but Hornets had the better share of possession. A 0-0 result and penalty flicks followed. A well taken flick by Glover was enough to secure the win and onto the semi finals.
Ashmoor were waiting. A team with 8 Devon county players.
But the Hornets boys raised their game and were the better team on the pitch. Shots from all over the D were kept out by some frantic Ashmoor defending. The occasional break by Ashmoor was thwarted by sound cool defending and good keeping by Rich Hooper. Player of the Day Bevan also played his part in this heroic performance which ended 0-0. Penalty flicks again and it took 8 flicks each team to decide the result. Sadly for Hornets it was the reliable Ashmoor keeper that edged the boys out, but they can hold heads high at a truly tremendous effort. Ashmoor went onto win the tournament and counted themselves lucky to have scraped through against Hornets.

24/02/08
ECV Hornets sent a very young team to the next round of the under 14 devon league games. Mainly deplted through half term commitments and injuries, the youngsters can hold their heads high after some spirited performances.
First game was against a talented Ashmoor side boasting several county squad boys and a 4-0 defeat was slightly flattering to the opposition. Many of the Hornets had not played full pitch hockey before and succumbed to the more experience opposition, despite some heroic defending by Jon Hoaen and Max Ansell.
Next up were Caradon and with 2 goals from a guest player and one from Caleb Phillips they won comfortably 3-0. Callum Pink and Darren Paul worked well on the wings as the team started to get used to each other. Due to other teams failing to appear, it was agreed they should play each other twice.
So along came Ashmoor again. The first 20 mins, Hornets displayed incredible resistance at the back Hoaen and Ansell time and again clearing with fantastic support for Toby Maddocks, Joss Knight and Keeper Rich Hooper who made many strong saves and clearances. Then with only minutes to go, Hornets broke free down the left, the ball went wide to Pink who crossed for Jack Greenall to beat the keeper and slot the ball home. A well deserved 1-0 win and the result of a battling team effort.
Last game was against Caradon again and this time, despite plenty of pressure on the visitors goal. the result was a goaless draw.
However, plenty to take from this day and now to the final round in Exeter on March 16th

13/01/2008

ECVH Hornets Hockey club sent 2 under 13 teams to the 3rd round of the Devon league at Ashburton.

The first game was between to 2 sides with the A team emerging 3-1 winners. Well taken goals from Ollie Maltby, James Glover and Matt Mitchem laid the platform for a good win before Tom Poustie ( borowed from Isca) replied for the B team.
The A team went on to play Taunton Vale and with 2 goals from player of the day Sam Tapp they went 2-1 up. However the passing game fell apart and they eventually lost 5-2 to a well organised taunton side.. their final game was against Ashmoor 2 and with goals from Max Ansell and Jack Greenall, they were comfortable 2-0 winners. There was solid defensive play too from young Jon Hoaen with Rich Hooper also having a very busy day playing in goal for both the A and B team.

The B team continued to play really well and have matured as a team as the season progresses..
Their second game was against Ashmoor 2 and can consider themselves unlucky to lose 2-0. Martin Hayfield and Josh Knight defended well and Darren Paul was always running after the ball and working hard.
Next up were Isca and again were unlucky to lose 1-0. Jack Greenall and Callum Pink worked tirelessly up front and tested the keeper more than once.
Finally. they came up against Ashmoor 1 and a 6-0 loss resulted. It would have been far worse were it not for some remarkable saves by keeper and player of the day Rich Hooper.
So onto the final round with plenty to work on and with much to savour.ECVH Hornets Hockey club sent 2 under 13 teams to the 3rd round of the Devon league at Ashburton.

Hornets 1 Isca 0
This was a very good start .Moves flowed from the mid field 4 of Greg Jolly ,Max Ansell,Oliver Footitt and Jack Greenhall . All four showed a very good understanding of each other and created many passing interchange moves.Oliver Maltby time and time again demonstrated his powerful forward directional runs and it was from one of these that gave Matthew Mitchem the opportunity to demonstrate his very quick and positive reactions in front of goal to make it 1-0.

Hornets 1 Taunton 2
A very confident start saw Hornets surge ahead against a very strong skilled and well organised Taunton side. Matthew Mitchem as a result of good control and quick reactions drove the ball home to make it 1-0.
Hornets were pressured by Taunton but time and time again they were thwarted by the excellent defensive trio of Player of the Match Seb Aearnley with the ever reliable James Bevan on the right and Alex Thurgate on the left.
In time the constant pressure and a short spell of inaccurate passing by Hornets allowed Taunton to take two well executed goals to finish the game 2-1 victors.

Hornets 0 Isca 1
A game of mixed virtues .Excellent moves often negated by poor final touches.Seb Aearnley often saving the day with thoughtful positioning and timely tackles in defence.
Richard Hooper always positive and couragious in goal was beaten by a well taken shot at goal.

Hornets 0 Taunton 3
Taunton proved too strong and organised in this return game. Hornets continued as always to work hard and fully deserved the praise from the coaches and spectators when they finished the game 0-3.
There is a lot of potential in this young developing Hornets side .They have a comradery and confidence combined with technical ability that will see them progress well in the future.

18/11/07
This was a very satisfactory performance by a fast maturing Hornets U16 team. They began with confidence and a belief in themselves that lasted throughout the entire game.
Very solid defensive work by Sam Daymond in the centre with Peter Thomas on the left and Russell Phillips on the right gave the rest of the team the knowledge that providing they created in mid field and delivered up front they would have the result they so keenly wanted.
The enthusiasm and commitment of man of the match Harry Gibson was contagious.
Tom Hiscock playing in centre forward role took the ball into the D passed neatly to Harry who struck home to make it 1-0.Pressure undulated at both ends but close to the final whistle another fine inter passing move saw Will Squire at left midfield pass cleverly to Tom Hiscock who shot at goal ,the ball deflected off the Ottery goaly and Jack Leach placed it confidently into the net to make it 2-0 at the end.
This was a good match that entertained spectators right to the finish.

Hornets U13A played the second round of the Sevens league hockey on Sunday at ISCA School.  The squad of 9 players were looking to put pressure on the top places, and started with a high tempo opener against a well drilled ISCA side.  Two Ollie Maltby goals and some solid defence work from Jon Hoaen and Sam Tapp saw off a late ISCA revival with a 2-1 win.  Next, an imposing Ashmoor side.  A lack of confidence to beat Ashmoor led Hornets into rushed passing and easy interceptions from which the opposition gained a 0-2 scoreline,  despite Rich Hooper's valiant efforts in goal. A quick pep-talk and change to the midfield saw Max Ansell, James Bevan, Jack Greenal & Maltby take control.  Good interplay and surging runs led to a 4-0 win over Dart.  Next up were Exe.  This is where Hornets were ruthless, slotting home 11 goals without reply. Tapp moving out of defence to score 4 goals. The final game against Ivybridge saw Bevan top up his tally to 5 goals on the day with 2 rasping shots.  With a third defensive shut-out for the dynamic Hooper in goal and defence of Matt Mitchum and Connor Barker, hornets ran out 4-0 winners. Players player of the day Ollie Maltby with 6 goals.

ECV Hornets sent a second team to the 2nd round of under 13 Devon league Boys event.
The team put up a much improved performance and deserved to come away with more than 4 losses. First game was against Dart and despite having the better of the play lost 1-0 to a breakaway goal. This was tough on the boys with both Doug Allan and Darren Paul coming close to scoring.
The following game saw the same pattern. Joss Knight , Tim Holloway and Martin Hayfield all showing good defensive skills with James Bevan and Callum Pink moving well on the wings. The team lost a very close match agin 1-0.
Then came the strong Ivybridge Boys and despite some heroic keeping from player of the day George Clegg, the boys sucumbed to a 2-0 loss.
Finally Taunton Vale showed the boys the benefit of passing and good support teamwork in a 6-0 win.
Much to take comfort from though as they head to the next round of games in January. Thanks must also go to the parents for their support at the games.

28/10/07

The under 14 boys had a tough day.
First up was Isca and despite having the majority of the possession, passes were not put together and Isca scored 2 well taken goals.
It has to be said that this was the first time they had played together and the team included 4 boys from Otter crickets.
Next up was a very strong Taunton Vale side who came out 3-0 winners. The Hornets were beginning to work together and again enjoyed good possession and often threatened the opponents goal.
Last game was against Exe and with 2 goals from Jake Smith and 1 from Ollie Maltby, the game was won 3-0.
This was a very young team and will no doubt mature well from this experience and are looking forward to playing these teams again on Nov 18th.

07/10/07

ECV Hornets entered 2 teams into the Devon hockey league at under 13 level.
The first round of games on Sunday 7th was their first opportunity to play as a team this season and will no doubt learn from the experience.

The opening game was between the A and B sides which went to the former 4-0 with goals from Ollie Maltby, Connor Barker, Sam Tapp and Matt Mitchem. The B side battle valiantly with hard work from their player of the day Caleb Phillips and heroic keeping by George Clegg. Both Joss Knight and Callum Pink also worked hard in midfield.

The A team then played a very strong and organised Taunton Vale side and lost 4-0. The difference between the 2 sides was the passing and movement and was a good lesson to the young Hornets.
Next game was against Ashmoor 2 and at last the passing began to fall into place and they dominated the game. The final score line of 2-0 was well deserved. Both goals coming by way of the A team player of the day Darren Paul. Elsewhere, Keeper Rich Hooper had a steady day in goal and Jon Hoaen was as ever, reliable in defence. A good starting block for the rest of the season.

The B team meanwhile struggled with the pace of the game, despite some hard work and determined play against some strong sides.

Against Ashmoor 2 they conceded 2 very quick goals but pulled themselves together to prevent further score. Daulton Crick managed to get away a few times but the opponents defence was too strong.
Next were Isca and again the defence failed to clear the ball and conceded 5 goals. However, they did score one through the hardworking Phillips to the joy of the whole team.

The final game was against Ashmoor 1 and a 5-0 defeat at the hands of a very well organised team which included several from the county under 14 squad.

Tim Holloway, Martin Bayfield and Anton Stephan all tried very hard to keep the opponents out. No doubt the experience will benefit the whole squad.

So its onto November 11th for the next round of games. Meanwhile Junior training continues every Tuesday evening at the Culm Valley sports centre from 6pm.
