Devon Junior League U12's

The Under 12 girls were at Ivybridge for their second day of matches and battled well all morning. Their first match was against Exe and despite great defending from Lauren Sanders, Annie Cornish, Kate Stevens and Alison Stanbury and terrific saves from Ellie Sanders, hornets lost 3-0. The second of the three games was against White Eagles, and once again they played well with great play amongst Lela Vile, Anna Thorne, Alice Harrison and Jess Hitt in midfield, but unfortunately the game went to White Eagles, 2-0. Finally, the last match was against Ivybridge, and the girls gave it their all, and they were unlucky to not score from good runs from Katie Blythe and Leah Thompson. The game ended in a nil-nil draw, but all in good spirits. Player of the day was Lela Vile, who played strongly in midfield.

Devon Junior League U10's

On Sunday 9th November in Ivybridge, the ECV Hornets Under 10 team played in their second round of tournaments for the season. Despite the terrible weather, they fought right from the start which resulted in a 1-0 win in the first match against Exe. The goal was scored by Meredith Ansell who was backed up by some excellent runs from Libby Morton, Christie Knight and Lauren Sanders. As it started to rain heavily, spirits weren't lost as another 3 goals from Meredith ended in a solid 3-0 win against ICSA 2. Some strong defending work from Eleanor Acfield and Emily Robinson ensured ICSA were not going to score! The day ended with a 0-0 draw against ISCA 2, with some excellent saves from Harriet Pick in goal. Meredith Ansell was voted player of the day!

A beautiful spring day greeted the ECV Hornets juniors as they played out the last round of their respective Devon League games.

Under 16 girls played at Exeter University and were topping the league as play began.

The girls hit by withdrawals due to Ten Tors training didnt get things their own way and lost their 2 opening games against Taunton and Otter Crickets 1-0. In both games, the girls were unlucky with the shots and fully deserved not to lose the games. Next were Teignmouth and an Emily Mitchem goal secured a 1-0 win. Goals were still hard to come by and it was still the case when they drew 0-0 with Isca, Final game of the day was against 2nd placed Plymouth. 2 Mitchem goals secured a 2-2 draw and also gave her the vote as player of the day.

A mixed bag of results and they now await the final league table placings.
Meanwhile at Exeter School the under 13 boys had 2 teams battling away. Withdrawals from 2 other teams meant that fixtures were cut.

The A team started with a 1-1 draw with Isca. A poor start and mix up in defence saw an early goal conceded. But slowly the boys found their form and a Jack Greenall shot pulled it level with 2 mins to go. Such was the change if form that they could have won the game as they piled on the pressure.
Next were the eventual league winners- Ashmoor who really showed what they are capable of with a convincing 3-0 win. Jon Hoaen and Max Ansell battled hard in defence but could ny keep out the Devon Champions.

Last League game was against Exe. Matt Mitchem opened the scoring but the team still were nt playing the passing game they are capable of. Words of advice from the coach and soon it began to flow. Greenall added a 2nd before Mitcxhem added 2 more. Ollie Maltby, Sam Tapp and James Glover worked tirelessly in support. Hoaen got the player of the day vote.

The B team opened up with a 2-0 win over Exe with Will Sobczak scoring 2 well taken goals. Darren Paul, Player of the day-Nixie Acfield and Dougie Allan worked put in great performances with Joss Knight performing heroics in defence.
Taunton Vale provided the other League game and they could do nothing to prevent a 3-0 loss despite some great saves by keeper George Clegg.
These boys have all improved a great deal since the opening games back in October. Many of them will now leap up to Under 14 for next season and with it new challenges of full pitch hockey.

And finally, with energy still left the 2 teams played out a friendly with the A team coming out 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Maltby.

The ECV Hornets under 14s girls and boys played their last round of matches in this seasons Devon League.
The girls event was again decimated by the no show of 2 teams leaving the Hornets to face local rivals White Eagles. Despite the pouring rain, there was a good flowing game and goals from Alice Daymond(2) Lucy Cridland (3) Louisa Squire and Abbie Hitt ensured a 7-0 win. Player of the day was Abbie Wilson-Date.
The result caps a fine season and leaves the girls as winners of the league. A fine performance as most of the team are still playing at under 13 level.
The Boys had a busier time at Exeter School with 2 games against both Ashmoor and Dart.
First up were Ashmoor and a thrilling game was decided by a cool finish by Matt Mitchem. The team started to settle but again had to rely on the one goal to sneak a 1-0 win against Dart. Jack Greenall scoring from the edge of the D.
So second game against Ashmoor. The boys were beginning to find their passing game. player of the day Max Ansell worked tirelessly at the back supported very well by Seb Acarnley and James Bevan. Goals from Ollie Maltby, Greg Jolly and Mitchem secured the win before a late consolation goal from Ashmoor. Final game of the morning saw the boys ease to a 4-0 win over Dart, Scorers were Maltby, Greenall, Greg Jolly and Nixie Acfield.
The midfield duo of Caleb Phillips & James Glover worked hard to support the team while goalie Rich Hooper produced the saves when needed.. These set of results mean that they top this group and finish in 5th place overall. Not bad as again this team is virtually all Under 13s so lots of promise shown.

ECV Hornets under 13 girls played the last round of games in this seasons Devon League. Sitting in 2nd place at the start of the day, good results were needed right from the off.
Unfortunately, bad preparation cost the team dearly and they found themselves 2-0 down to an organised Ivybridge team within 10 mins. Driven on by player of the day Abi Summers, the team began to wake to the occasion and with a minute to go, pulled one back through Louisa Squire. Ivybridge scored again from a short corner to seal a 3-1 win.
Spirits were low and they knew they had under performed and that next up were the league leaders Isca Dragons. Inspired by a good talking to by the coach, the girls produced the goods and played as a team. they did enough to sneak a win but came off with red faces held high after a 0-0 draw.
Filled with belief again, the girls then saw off Dart with a 2-0 win. The defence of Summers and Abbie Wilson Date held firm and with the midfield trio of Jordane Vincent, Abbie Hitt & Ruby Leach keeping the play flowing, it was just reward that Hitt and Alice Daymond were the scorers.
Final game was against Teignmouth. The passing game was now beginning to work and prove dividends. A hat-trick from Squire and one from Daymond ensured a 4-0 win, Teignmouth came close to scoring at the end but were thwarted by and excellent save by keeper Abi Lunn.
These results should have ensured a top 2 finish in the league and bodes well for the future as most of this team will move up to the under 14s next season.

On Sunday ECV Hornets sent a strong under 13 girls team to the Devon Minis Hockey tournament at St Lukes School, Exeter.

First game was against Dart and the girls took a while to settle and didnt play their best hockey. Even though they won a scrappy game 1-0 courtesy of a cool finish from Abbie Hitt. Next up were Exe and a very well organised side deservedly won 3-0. Exe showed the Hornets the benefit of team play and neat passing. But even at 1-0 down at half time, hornets continued to work hard. the defence of Abbie Wilson-Date, Ella Knight and the younger Jade Kennerly made some timely tackles and clearances.

The 3rd game was against the Blundells School and the school side were camped in the Hornets half for the entire first half. But outstanding and sometimes last ditch defending by the whole team prevented any score. Player of the day Abi Lunn stood firm in goal keeping out a barrage of shots. 0-0 at half time was a tremendous effort. The tide turned in the second half and Hornets had 6 consecutive long corners as Blundells took their turn to defend. Alice Daymond, Louisa Squire and right wing Ruby Leach worked hard to find a way through but Blundells broke away and scored to win 1-0.

Final game was against Maynards School,Exeter. A crappy game to finish with which the Hornets should have won easily, But legs and bodies were getting tired and the finishing shot couldnt be found. 0-0 being the result.

So, no progress to the semi finals but the team can take credit for the effort and determination shown throughout.

The second round of the Devon Under 16 Girls Tournament took place on Sunday 11th November at Ashmoor Recreation Centre, Ashburton.  The Exeter and Culm Vale Hornets took part in two matches, drawing the first one against Ottery Crickets one all, with Sarah Clayton scoring for Hornets.  The second match, against Isca Dragons, was won by Hornets, two goal to one, both Hornets goals scored by Emily Mitchem.  Some very good hockey was displayed by all sides with lots of end-to-end action and good skills demonstrated.

The under 16 girls played at Exeter against Teignmouth and came out 2-1 winners. The game was fast flowing end to end stuff with Emily Mitchem scoring both of the Hornets goals. Danni Luke had an excellent game in goal and was only beaten when the ball was deflected of a defenders foot. This was the girls first outing as a team and things look good for the rest of the season.

The first round of the Pennywell farms sponsored Under 11 girls league got under way on sunday at Exeter University and the ECV Hornets girls had some mixed fortunes.

First game was against local rivals White Eagles and they had a comfortable 2-0 win with goals taken well by Rosie Williams and Meredith Ansell. Rosie worked tirelessly in midfield and was well supported by Lela Vile and Harriett Pick. The defence of Annabella Cornish and Amy Hensberg played solidly.
Next up were Teignmouth who although provided stronger opposition were still beaten 2-0. Goals came from Lela Vile and Ansell again. Several of the players are in their first year of playing hockey including brand new keeper Alice Jasinski who showed great composure in a couple of attacks.

The winning run was truly halted in the next game as they were beaten 5-0 by a strong Ashmoor side. This was a hard lesson for the young girls but will do them good in the long run. The final game was against Isca Dragons A team and the more experienced team showed the Hornets how to pass and support in securing a 4-0 win.

Plenty to build on though. 2 wins and 2 losses to take to the next round of games next month. As always, we welcome more new under 11 girls to training on tuesday evenings at 6pm at Culm Valley Sports centre from Tues 30th Oct.
